Shri Kapil Dev Sood, Advocate,
Convener, Cultural Affairs Sub-Committee,
Sood Sabha, SHIMLA.

Respected Kapil Ji,

I thankfully acknowledge receipt of your endorsement of a letter dated 11th of November, 2004 to the address of Hon!ble President. I have thoroughly gone through the contents.

Although your endorsement only directs me to repeat the instructions to The Administrator to block Hall & Gallery on certain dates which you already claim to have given as well as to put up the matter in next meeting of the Managing Committee, yet I am taking liberty to express my views on the contents and would like to take up the issues raised by you threadbare.

There is no question of your taxing any of the members of the Managing Committee. I feel that it was otherwise. You being suddenly incapacitated due to your recent eye surgery, we had to re-organize a few matters as certain Heads of Sub-Committees had conveyed their reluctance to continue or perform the job, which had been assigned to them. Sheri Vijay Karol had been apprising you of day-to-day situation. I took certain decision after consulting the active members as well as with our president. May be my inexperience had left a few gaping shortcomings but under the circumstances and with the manpower available with me that is the best I could have done. There had never been any occasion nor I wish that it should be in future when your views did not find favour with the members. I can assure you that yours are the words which are most respected. At times there were occasional suggestions or expressions of personal views. You had always been magnanimous to relent and respect the feelings of other members, which speaks volume of your greatness.

After your keenness about declamation contests, you might have perhaps envisaged that my number comes next about showing interest in this activity. I fully endorse your views about contests being held in both Hindi and English. I have an open mind about the place where the contests should be held but am strictly against the same being held in our temple hall. I have to make a suggestion in this regard. When a contest is held in English, I offer to be one of the judges. This has two reasons. Firstly, it will project a direct involvement of The Managing Committee and secondly, perhaps most of you may not be aware, I had been myself a very keen orator and very actively took part in declamation contests and represented my college even up to University level. Whatever I have written on this topic is purely my personal view. The voice of the Managing Committee has to prevail.

Regarding advance planning of SOOD MELA -2005, I am at a loss to find reason to agree with such an early setting up of calendar of events. As you have rightly pointed out, eight members have to pave way for re-constitution of The Managing Committee by third-fourth week of APRIL, 2005. I am of the considered opinion that transgression of the domain as well as in the area of planning of the next Committee should be avoided. There are bound to be different ideas and field of approach with the stepping in of new brains. I wish and pray that new entrants show more and better zeal than the present lot. I have a feeling that taking a decision in this matter at this point of time is highly premature. I am sure, you will also not like to impose your thoughts and ideas by recording some thing in absentia which has a binding effect on the new entrants. You have desired to block Hall & Gallery for five days. Is there any school of thought going on that sports events can also be held in our own complex? If it is possible, I shall be the happiest person. Nothing can be more dignified than holding such competitions in our premises. You must have explored this possibility and I shall be obliged to be enlightened on this aspect.

Position with respect to Free Medical Aid and Blood Donation Camp is slightly different. We have already resolved that this event should be held every year on the birthday of father of the nation. Unless or until the decision is reviewed by the present or next Managing Committee, the same has to be implemented. It becomes a moral responsibility of the continuing members of the present Managing Committee to bring to the notice of new members about the existence of this resolution. All we can do is keep the accommodation blocked for two days and leave the rest to the collective wisdom of those persons who will be carrying the flag after April, 2005.

I am very happy to note that you also share my anxiety with respect to replacement of eight members of the Managing Committee. You may recollect that a few months ago, I had an informal discussion with you after a meeting regarding our tenure. I was of the view that our tenure is shorter than what you had expressed. Please take my word for granted that I shall act faster than all of you expect me in this matter. I would like to confide that we should set an example by cutting short our tenure by a few days, if not by few months. As far as I am concerned, I am not going to continue even a minute more than two years. I am fully alive to my responsibility as secretary of The SABHA and shall see to it that there is no violation of CONSTITUTION by us. I shall initiate a discussion on this subject in the next meeting and expect that you will vehemently support me on this score so that programme is chalked out at the earliest.

I am now referring to the last paragraph of your letter. I have read it a number of times but failed to grasp its meaning. I implore you to elaborate this part of your letter. Assignment of recording or sending out communications is a duty, which has been cast upon me. I cannot recollect any instance when I might have indulged in any offensive or critical write up. If at all I have done something like that in the past, believe me, SIR, it must have been inadvertent or under the directions of The Managing Committee. I am ready and willing to mend fences for this erroneous deed. As far as criticism is concerned, all of you are aware that I was at the receiving end without being afforded any opportunity of explanations. Most of my colleagues had been indifferent or refused to come to my rescue by countering baseless and absolutely false allegations. I have consumed and digested all this by consoling myself that in such a vast society like SOOD SABHA, which comprises now of two thousand life members, such things have to be taken in their stride.

You have directed and I shall act by putting up your suggestions in the next meeting. I have to say that subject to convenience of the members, I intend to fix the meeting on 21st of this month because after 25th instant, I shall be away from Shimla to attend a wedding where my presence is unavoidable and till 30th of Nov.,2004.Suggestions to conduct the meeting on week days between 22nd and 25th or in the first week of December,2004 can also be explored.

With my regards,

I REMAIN

Yours very truly,

(VISHWA NATH SOOD)
